Active speakers or passive speakers?

Speaker systems consist of two basic parts, the amplifier which turns low power audio signals into high power signals and the driver which take this high power signal and vibrates, physically moving the air and creating sound. Active speakers have the amplifier built into the speaker cabinet (the casing containing the drivers) whilst passive speakers contain the drivers alone and require an external amplifier. Active speakers have advantages when it comes to the quality of the audio they produce however they are heavier and require AC power as well as an audio signal.

Loudspeakers come in various designs for different purposes. Large subwoofer drivers create low level frequencies and are often placed in separate speaker cabinets. Tweeters, used to produce high level frequencies, are much smaller and are often housed in horn-shaped enclosures to diffract the sound, projecting it over a wider area. Mid-range speakers produce the frequencies between. A crossover is used in conjunction with the different types of speakers to separate out full bandwidth audio signals into specific frequency bands.
